What is WPM?

WPM (Words Per Minute) is the standard measurement of typing speed. It tells you how many words you can type in one minute. WPM is used worldwide by employers, schools, and typing certifications to assess keyboard proficiency.

WPM Calculation Formula
WPM = (Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Minutes
A "word" is standardized at 5 characters (including spaces)

Net WPM vs Raw WPM — What's the Difference?

Raw WPM counts every keystroke you make, including errors. It represents your gross typing speed. Net WPM (also called adjusted or corrected WPM) subtracts errors from your total, giving you a more accurate picture of your effective typing speed.

For example: If you type 500 characters in one minute (100 raw WPM) but 50 characters are errors, your net WPM would be approximately 90 WPM. Most employers care about net WPM because it reflects actual productive output.

TypeCrt shows both metrics so you can track your raw speed and accuracy independently.

What TypeCrt Measures

How to Improve Your WPM

1. Learn Touch Typing

The single biggest improvement comes from learning to type without looking at the keyboard. Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF + JKL;) and train muscle memory for each key.

2. Accuracy First, Speed Second

Slow down until you can type with 98%+ accuracy. Speed naturally increases as your muscle memory develops. Correcting errors wastes more time than typing slightly slower.

3. Use Adaptive Practice

TypeCrt's KeyForge mode identifies your weakest keys (the ones where you're slowest or make the most errors) and creates custom practice sessions targeting them specifically.

4. Practice 15 Minutes Daily

Consistency beats intensity. Short daily sessions build muscle memory more effectively than occasional long sessions. Track your progress in TypeCrt's profile analytics.
