Switch between retro CRT aesthetic and clean modern glassmorphism.

Retro mode enables CRT scanlines, glow effects, bracket-style navigation, and phosphor text bloom — designed to emulate vintage terminal displays. Modern mode removes all retro artifacts for a clean, minimalist glassmorphic UI with smooth surfaces and subtle blur effects.

Control the visibility of horizontal CRT scanlines.

Adjusts the opacity of the horizontal scanline overlay. Weak (8%) is barely visible. Mid (15%) is balanced. Max (25%) is the full CRT experience.

Add phosphor bloom to correctly typed characters.

Enables a subtle luminous glow (text-shadow) around correctly typed characters, simulating the phosphor bloom of vintage CRT monitors. Errors receive a red glow. This effect stacks with the theme's color palette for dramatic visual feedback. Disable for a flatter, cleaner look.

How intense the text glow effect appears.

Controls the strength of the multi-layer diffuse glow on typed characters and active elements. Off disables all glow. Subtle is barely-there ambiance. Low is a gentle warmth. Mid provides balanced CRT phosphor bloom. High creates dramatic vintage glow.

Scale the typing area text size.

Controls the CSS font-size of the typing display. Normal (1.0rem) is the default. Large and Huge increase line spacing proportionally. Larger fonts reduce the number of visible lines but improve readability.

Set the maximum width of the content area.

Adjusts the max-width of the main container. Narrow (900px) is ideal for focused typing on smaller monitors. Normal (1200px) balances readability and content. Wide (1500px) utilizes ultrawide displays fully. This affects all pages including results and profile.

Choose the shape of your typing cursor.

Line shows a thin vertical bar. Block highlights the entire character cell. Underline sits below the character. Outline draws a hollow rectangle around the character. None hides the caret completely — recommended only for advanced typists who don't need visual position feedback.

How smoothly the caret animates between positions.

Controls the CSS transition speed of caret movement. Off makes the caret teleport instantly (zero latency). Weak adds a subtle 60ms ease. Mid provides a noticeable 120ms spring. Strong creates a smooth 200ms physics-based animation. Higher fluidity looks more premium but adds perceived input latency.

How the countdown timer is displayed during timed tests.

Off hides the timer completely. Bar shows a horizontal progress bar. Mini displays a compact numeric counter. Text shows a large prominent numeric countdown. The timer is only visible in timed test modes.

Swap main and sub text colors in the typing area.

Inverts which color is used for untyped text vs the main accent. Useful if you prefer the secondary color as the base text or want a different visual hierarchy while keeping the same theme.

Every word gets a unique color from the theme palette.

Assigns a mathematically distributed color from your active theme's palette to each word in the typing area. This makes the test visually vibrant and can help with word boundary recognition. Disable for a uniform single-color text display.

Animate the transition when text scrolls to the next line.

When enabled, the typing display smoothly slides upward as you complete lines. When disabled, lines snap instantly to the new position. Smooth scrolling looks premium but on very fast typing, instant snap may feel more responsive.

Show a visual marker between words.

Adds a subtle character between words to make word boundaries more visible. Off uses standard whitespace. Bullet (·) adds a centered dot. Dash (‒) adds a thin figure dash. Bar (│) adds a thin vertical line. These are purely visual — they don't affect typing or scoring.

Control whether typing stops when you make a mistake.

Off allows you to continue typing regardless of errors. Word mode prevents moving to the next word until the current word is corrected. Letter mode stops at the exact character where the mistake occurred — you must fix it before proceeding. Stricter modes improve accuracy training but reduce raw speed.

Restrict use of the backspace key.

Off allows unlimited backspacing. On prevents deleting correctly typed characters — you can only backspace over errors. Max disables backspace entirely — every keystroke is final. This forces you to commit to each character, building typing confidence over time.

How typing errors are visually indicated.

Off shows errors in the error color without additional indicators. Below displays the correct character as a small hint below the mistyped letter. Replace swaps the displayed character with what you actually typed, making mistakes immediately obvious.

Choose a hotkey to instantly restart the current test.

Assigns a keyboard shortcut to immediately reset and start a new test with fresh words. Tab is the most common choice (matching Monkeytype). Esc is an alternative. Off disables the shortcut — you must click the restart button manually.

Require spacebar after every word, even when errors are present.

When enabled, the spacebar always advances to the next word, regardless of whether the current word was typed correctly. When disabled, spacebar behavior depends on your Stop On Error setting. This is useful for training consistent spacebar rhythm.

Do not display characters typed beyond the word's length.

When you type more characters than a word contains, the extra characters are normally shown in a distinct color. Enabling this hides them completely, keeping the display clean. Errors are still counted in your accuracy score.

Require the opposite hand's shift key for capitals.

Enforces proper touch-typing technique by requiring you to use the shift key on the opposite side of the keyboard from the character being capitalized. For example, typing "A" requires the right shift key. Incorrect shift usage is counted as an error.

Display a warning banner when Caps Lock is active.

Shows a prominent visual alert when your Caps Lock key is enabled, preventing accidental all-caps typing that would cause every character to register as an error. Recommended to keep enabled.

Require 100% word completion before advancing.

When enabled, you must type every character of the current word correctly before the spacebar will advance to the next word. This prevents skipping difficult words and ensures complete accuracy practice.

Hide all text feedback while typing.

Completely conceals character coloring and error highlighting during the test. You type without any visual feedback on correctness until the test ends. This is an advanced training mode that builds muscle memory and trust in your typing accuracy.

Set the overall difficulty level for failure detection.

Normal has lenient failure thresholds. Expert tightens minimum WPM and accuracy requirements — the test will auto-fail if performance drops below the threshold. Master applies the strictest requirements, designed for advanced typists seeking a challenge.

End the test instantly when the last word is typed correctly.

When enabled in word-count mode, the test finishes immediately once the final word is completed correctly — no need to press spacebar. This eliminates the slight delay at the end of a test. In timed mode, the timer always ends the test regardless of this setting.

Show real-time WPM during the test.

Off hides the live speed counter. Mini shows a compact numeric display. Text shows a prominent animated counter with the full label. Live speed uses exponential smoothing to avoid jittery numbers — the display rises quickly on new keystrokes and decays gently when typing slows.

Show real-time accuracy percentage during the test.

Displays your running accuracy as you type. This uses keypress-based calculation — each correct keypress and each error are tracked independently. Backspacing does not erase errors from the accuracy count.

Show per-word burst speed during the test.

Displays the WPM speed for the most recently completed word. Burst speed is calculated from the actual time and characters typed for that specific word, giving you immediate feedback on word-by-word performance.

Choose the unit for displaying typing speed.

WPM (Words Per Minute) divides total correct characters by 5 per the industry standard. CPM (Characters Per Minute) shows the raw character count. WPS (Words Per Second) divides WPM by 60 for a decimal representation. All three measure the same underlying data differently.

Show speeds as 85.3 instead of 85.

When enabled, all speed displays include one decimal place. This provides finer granularity for distinguishing between close performances. When disabled, speeds are rounded to the nearest whole number for a cleaner display.

Display a ghost caret that types at a reference speed.

A second semi-transparent caret moves through the text at a preset speed, giving you a visual reference to pace against. Average uses your recent session average. Best uses your personal best WPM. Custom lets you set a specific WPM target. The ghost caret helps you push beyond your current speed.

Choose the visual style of the ghost cursor. It is rendered with reduced opacity to distinguish it from your main caret.

Play audio feedback on each keystroke.

Adds satisfying audio feedback to your typing. Click emulates a mechanical switch. Pop provides a soft bubble sound. Typewriter recreates the classic mechanical typewriter strike. Volume can be controlled separately. Audio is synthesized locally — no network requests.

Play a distinct error tone when typing a wrong character.

Provides immediate auditory feedback on mistakes, complementing the visual error indication. The error sound is a short, subtle tone that doesn't interrupt your typing flow.

Play a click sound on every UI button interaction.

Adds subtle audio feedback when clicking UI elements like settings toggles, theme swatches, and navigation buttons. Independent of the typing sound setting.
