SSC Typing Test with SSC’s own marking

CHSL and CGL skill test practice in English. The clock, the passage and the marking work the way the skill test does: full mistakes, half mistakes and your error percentage, rule by rule.

The SSC skill test is taken on a computer keyboard. Practise on one if you can; a phone keyboard will not show your real speed.

Punctuality is often described as the politeness of kings, but in a government office it is something more practical than good manners. When an office opens on time, a farmer who has travelled from a distant village does not lose a day's wages waiting at a closed counter, and a student who needs a certificate before the last date of an admission form does not miss a chance earned through months of work. Every file that moves late carries a cost that is rarely written down. A pension that is delayed by three weeks may force an elderly person to borrow from a moneylender at a high rate of interest; a licence that is held up may stop a small shop from opening during the festival season, when it would have earned a large part of its yearly income. For these reasons, the habit of being on time should not be seen as a minor rule of discipline. It is a part of the service itself. Many offices have introduced biometric attendance, citizen charters and fixed timelines for common services, and these measures have helped. Yet no machine can make an employee attentive to the person standing at the counter. The real change comes when officers and clerks understand that the public counter is the face of the State. A clerk who greets visitors politely, explains which documents are missing and tells them exactly when to return saves them at least one more journey. A section officer who clears the files on the table before leaving for the day prevents a backlog that would otherwise take weeks to remove. Senior officers set the tone: if meetings begin late and decisions are postponed without reason, the same attitude spreads quickly to every desk below. On the other hand, when the head of an office keeps to the schedule and respects the time of others, the staff usually follow the example without being told. It must also be remembered that punctuality is not the same as hurry. A file cleared in haste, with wrong figures or a missing signature, will come back and consume even more time. The aim is to finish work within the time allotted while maintaining accuracy. Good planning makes this possible. An employee who notes down the tasks of the next day before leaving, keeps important papers in order and replies to letters promptly will rarely be found running behind. In the long run, an administration that values time earns the trust of the people it serves, and that trust is the foundation on which every public programme depends.
The clock starts on your first key.0 key depressions

Most typing tests give you a speed and an accuracy figure. SSC does not mark that way. It reads your script against the passage and counts full mistakes and half mistakes under a written guideline, and you qualify on the key depressions you typed and the percentage of errors you made.

This simulator marks your script with those rules and shows every mistake it counted, with the clause it comes from. Pick your exam and your category above, type the passage, and see whether that attempt would qualify.

How SSC marks a typing script

SSC publishes its method as the Revised Guidelines for Evaluation of Typing Test/DEST Scripts. The simulator applies it clause by clause.

Full mistakes: 1 each

  • A word or figure left out
  • A wrong word or figure in its place
  • An extra word or figure not in the passage
  • A spelling error: a letter added, dropped, repeated or changed
  • A word repeated, as in I shall shall be
  • An incomplete, half-typed word

Half mistakes: ½ each

  • Spacing: Ihope, I h ave, or two spaces between words
  • A capital letter for a small one, or the other way round
  • A punctuation mark left out, added or changed
  • Two words swapped: hope I for I hope
  • A paragraph indented with spaces instead of the Tab key

Total errors = full mistakes + (half mistakes ÷ 2)
Error % = total errors ÷ words attempted × 100

You qualify when you type at least the required key depressions and your error percentage stays within the limit for your category. Words you never reached at the end of the passage are not counted as left out.

Common questions

Which SSC exams have a typing test?

SSC CHSL has a typing test for Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant posts (35 wpm in English, 10 minutes) and a data entry speed test for Data Entry Operators (8,000 key depressions per hour, 15 minutes). SSC CGL has a data entry speed test (DEST) for posts such as Tax Assistant (8,000 key depressions per hour, 15 minutes).

How does SSC count full and half mistakes?

Under SSC’s evaluation guideline, a word left out, a wrong word, an extra word, a spelling error, a repeated word or a half-typed word is a full mistake. Spacing errors, wrong capital letters, punctuation errors, two words swapped, and a paragraph indented with spaces instead of the Tab key are half mistakes. Total errors are the full mistakes plus half the half mistakes.

Is this the same as the real SSC skill test?

The time limits, the key depression targets and the marking rules follow SSC’s notices and its evaluation guideline. The passages are original practice passages written in the same style, not previous papers, and the screen is TypeCrt’s own. In the real test the clock starts when the test opens; here it starts on your first key.
