Typing questions, answered
The questions people actually type into a search box about speed, accuracy and practice. Every number below is attributed to a named study or marked plainly as unsourced. Where the honest answer is “nobody has measured this,” that is what it says.
Two sources do most of the work here. Speed and percentile figures come from Dhakal et al. (CHI 2018), which analysed 136,857,600 keystrokes from 168,960 participants. Findings about fingers and technique come from Feit et al. (CHI 2016), which put optical motion capture on 30 typists' hands. Both are listed with DOIs on the evidence page, along with the common typing claims we could not source and therefore do not repeat.
Is my speed any good?
Every answer in this section compares against the same distribution: a mean of 51.56 WPM (SD 20.2), a fastest-10% threshold near 78 WPM and a slowest-10% threshold near 26 WPM. A “word” is five characters, the standard convention in text-entry research — which is why a score measured here is comparable with published figures.
What is a good WPM typing speed?
Anything above roughly 52 WPM is above average. Above about 78 WPM puts you in the fastest 10 percent; below about 26 WPM puts you in the slowest 10 percent, which is also where deliberate practice pays back fastest.
The 40 WPM figure repeated across most typing sites is not traceable to any comparable study. We looked, could not find it, and list it as unsupported on the evidence page rather than passing it along. Full breakdown: what is a good typing speed.
Is typing 27 WPM good?
27 WPM is below average but not unusual — it sits just above the slowest-10% threshold of roughly 26 WPM.
It is also the most improvable position on the whole curve. At this speed the constraint is essentially never finger speed; it is looking down at the keyboard, and using a different finger for the same letter each time. Both are fixable in weeks. Start at learn to type.
Is typing 37 WPM good?
37 WPM is below the measured average of 51.56 WPM, but comfortably clear of the slowest 10 percent. It is a normal speed for someone who types accurately without formal training.
One caveat worth knowing: 37 WPM looks close to “average” only because most sites put average at 40. Against the figure that actually has a study behind it, you are about 15 WPM below the middle.
Is typing 40 WPM fast?
No — 40 WPM is below the measured average. It is a functional working speed and roughly the floor most data-entry listings ask for, but it is not fast.
40 WPM gets called average so often that the claim has become self-reinforcing: sites cite each other, and none of them cite a study. The largest measurement puts the mean at 51.56 WPM.
Is 70 WPM with 97% accuracy good?
Yes. 70 WPM is close to the fastest-10% threshold of about 78 WPM and well above the average.
97 percent is the weaker half of that pair. It works out to roughly one error every 33 characters, and each one costs you the backspace plus the retype — errors are paid for twice. Worth knowing: Dhakal et al. found faster typists make fewer uncorrected errors, not more. Accuracy is not what you trade away to get faster.
Is 100 WPM with 99% accuracy good?
That is comfortably in the top few percent. 100 WPM is far beyond the fastest-10% threshold of about 78 WPM, in a sample of 168,960 people whose fastest participants were recorded at 120 WPM and above.
The 99 percent is the harder half of the achievement. Roughly one error per 100 characters while holding an inter-key interval near 120 ms is a genuinely difficult combination to sustain.
Is 70 WPM with 2 fingers good?
Yes — and it is less unusual than it sounds. Feit et al. put motion capture on 30 typists and found no significant difference between touch typists and self-taught typists: 57.83 WPM against 58.93 WPM, with the self-taught group nominally faster (Mann–Whitney U = 103, p = 0.38).
The paper states directly that some participants using only one or two fingers per hand reached performance “normally attributed to touch typists.” What predicts speed is pressing a given letter with the same finger every time — not how many fingers are involved.
Is 50 WPM good for a 13 year old?
50 WPM is essentially the all-ages adult average, so for a 13-year-old it is strong.
We will not quote an age-banded norm. The tables of average WPM by age that circulate widely cannot be traced to any study, so this site lists them as unsupported rather than repeating them. Comparing against the adult distribution is the honest option available, and 50 WPM sits around the middle of it.
Limits and records
What is a top 1% typing speed?
There is no published 99th-percentile figure, so every exact “top 1 percent” number you have seen is an extrapolation. The largest dataset publishes the 90th percentile at roughly 78 WPM and stops there.
What the paper does report is that its fastest participants were recorded at 120 WPM and above. Treat that as the observed upper band for ordinary typists, and treat any precise top-1-percent claim as invented.
Is typing 150 WPM possible?
Yes, but it is rare. In a sample of 168,960 people the fastest group was recorded at 120 WPM and above, so 150 WPM sits beyond where ordinary typists cluster.
The mechanics explain the rarity. Sustained 150 WPM needs an average inter-key interval near 80 ms; the fastest 10 percent of that sample averaged 121.70 ms — and, notably, with a standard deviation of only 11.96 ms against 123.36 ms for the slowest 10 percent. At that level you are not just faster, you are metronomic.
Has anyone typed 300 WPM?
Not on a standard keyboard, in any verified sustained form we could source.
Speeds above 300 WPM are reached on stenotype machines, which are chorded — the typist presses combinations that produce whole syllables or words at once. That is a different instrument, and comparing it to a QWERTY WPM score is like comparing a chord to a note.
On a normal keyboard, a few words can spike very high. That is burst speed, not a rate. Any 300 WPM claim that does not state a duration is quoting the burst.
What is the fastest typing speed ever recorded?
The commonly cited records are Stella Pajunas at 216 WPM on an IBM electric typewriter in 1946, and Barbara Blackburn at around 212 WPM sustained, recorded by Guinness.
Both are record claims rather than peer-reviewed measurements, set on typewriters under conditions that do not map cleanly onto a browser test. Held to the scientific literature instead, the honest ceiling is the one above: 120 WPM and higher among the fastest participants measured on ordinary computer keyboards.
Are Gen Z fast typers?
We could not find a study comparing typing speed by generation, so we are not going to answer it.
The one large-scale finding that bears on the question is about training rather than age: participants who had taken a typing course averaged 54.35 WPM against 49.00 WPM for those who had not. That is a gap of 5.35 WPM — Cohen's d = 0.27, a small effect. Heavy phone use trains thumb typing on a different layout, and whether that transfers to a physical keyboard is, as far as we can tell, unmeasured.
Learning to type
Can I learn typing in 7 days?
You can learn the key positions in about a week. You cannot reach a fast speed in one.
We found no credible longitudinal study supporting any specific improvement schedule, so anyone promising you a WPM figure by a date is guessing. What a week of daily practice realistically buys is typing without looking down — the change that makes every later hour of practice worth more.
Expect your speed to fall for the first stretch. That is the cost of stopping looking at the keyboard, and it is the reason most people abandon the switch a few days in.
How do I type fast in 1 day?
You cannot. Typing is motor learning, and it consolidates over days, not hours.
What one day can do is remove what is costing you most. The three behaviours motion-capture research identified as separating fast typists from slow ones:
- Unambiguous finger-to-key mapping — a given letter is pressed by the same finger every time, whichever finger that is
- Active preparation — the hand moves toward the next key before it is needed
- Reduced global hand motion — hands stay anchored; fingers travel, hands do not
None of those need a month. They need a decision and a temporary slowdown.
Is it possible to learn to type faster?
Yes — and the research treats speed as trainable rather than innate.
The measured gap between people who took a typing course and people who did not was only 5.35 WPM, a small effect. Read the other way, that is encouraging: formal instruction is not the deciding factor, so how you practise matters more than whether you were taught properly at nine years old.
How can I learn to type faster?
Practise the keys you are worst at, not the ones you already know.
This is the single most useful thing on this page. Roughly 70 percent of English keystrokes land on nine letters you almost certainly type well already — so ordinary typing practice spends most of its time rehearsing your strengths. That is why general practice plateaus.
The order that works: fix the three technique items above, then drill your weakest keys specifically. Is typing hard for dyslexic people?
We found no controlled study measuring typing speed in dyslexic versus non-dyslexic typists, so we will not state a figure.
What can be said without overreaching: typing is often recommended in dyslexia support because it removes handwriting legibility from the task, makes spelling correctable, and pairs each letter with one fixed movement. In practice the settings that tend to help are adjustable text size and letter spacing, a calm high-contrast display, and practice text made of real words rather than random letters — all of which are adjustable in settings.
Accuracy
How do I get 100% accuracy in typing?
Slow down until the errors stop, then let the speed come back on its own.
Accuracy is not a separate skill you trade against speed. Dhakal et al. found faster typists make fewer uncorrected errors, not more — the two rise together, which means practising sloppily fast is training the wrong thing.
On a long test, 100 percent is rare and not worth chasing. The useful target is 97–99 percent; below that, time spent on backspace and retyping costs more than the speed gained. If your errors cluster on a few specific keys, that is a weak-key problem, not carelessness — and it responds to targeted drilling rather than to trying harder.

Touch typing and fingers
What is touch typing?
Typing without looking at the keyboard, using muscle memory to find each key.
The classical form assigns all ten fingers to fixed keys with the hands resting on the home row — ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right, with the index fingers locating F and J by their raised bumps.
The part that matters is the not-looking. The strict ten-finger assignment is a teaching convention, and as the next answer shows, the evidence does not establish it as necessary.
Is touch typing faster?
Not by itself, on the evidence available.

The difference was not statistically significant (U = 103, p = 0.38), and the self-taught group was nominally faster on every column. What the touch typists reliably had was consistent finger-to-key mapping — the trait that does predict speed. Touch typing is one dependable route to that consistency. It is not the only one.
How can I learn to touch type?
Put your hands on the home row, move your eyes to the screen, and keep them there.
Add letters a few at a time rather than attacking the whole keyboard — this is why KeyForge unlocks letters progressively instead of starting you on all 26. Accept one to two weeks of being slower than you were before you pass your old speed.
The rule that matters more than any finger chart: a given letter is always pressed by the same finger, whichever finger that ends up being.
What is the 10 finger rule for typing?
It assigns every key to one specific finger, with the hands on the home row and each finger reaching only its own column.
It is the standard teaching method, and it works — because it produces consistent finger-to-key mapping, which is genuinely one of the three predictors of speed.
But the rule as usually stated overclaims. Motion-capture research found the number of fingers used did not predict speed, and that everyday typists using fewer fingers can exceed 70 WPM. The ten-finger method is a good way to get consistency, not a requirement for speed. TypeCrt does not enforce or score “correct” fingering for exactly this reason.
Testing and practising
How can I test my typing skills?
Run a timed test of at least 60 seconds and record net WPM, raw WPM and accuracy together. A WPM figure without an accuracy figure beside it is meaningless.
- Use 60 seconds, not 15. A short test lets one bad word distort the whole score.
- Repeat across days rather than retrying until you get a number you like. Speed varies by several WPM between sittings; the median of several runs is your real speed.
- Watch the gap between raw and net WPM. That gap is exactly what your errors cost you.

Where can I practice typing online for free?

Is there a 5-minute typing test?
TypeCrt's timed mode runs 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, so there is no preset 5-minute option.
Two ways round it: Zen mode has no timer and generates text until you stop, and Custom mode lets you paste an exact passage — the one your exam uses, for instance — and type that. For a strict five minutes, run Zen against a separate timer.
Worth knowing before you bother: most published benchmarks and employer tests use 60 seconds, so a 60-second score is the one that compares to other people's numbers.
How can I practice typing in Korean?
Not on TypeCrt — this site is English only. The word lists, quotes and per-key analysis are all built for the Latin alphabet.
For Hangul you need a tool that handles the Dubeolsik layout and composes jamo into syllable blocks through your operating system's IME. This matters more than it sounds: a typing tool that reads raw keystrokes will score composed Hangul incorrectly, because several keystrokes produce one visible character. Test any tool by typing a single syllable and checking that its character count matches what you see on screen.
Typing for work
Can I earn money by typing?
Yes — data entry, transcription, captioning and court reporting are real paid work. Each listing states the speed it requires, so the useful move is to read a few listings in your market rather than trust a general figure.
Transcription generally asks for more speed than data entry, because you are typing continuously against audio instead of against a form that waits for you.
Two things worth knowing before you start:
- The best-paid end of this work is stenotype-based — a chorded machine and formal training, not a fast QWERTY score. A high WPM on a browser test does not lead there directly.
- Any listing that asks you to pay first is a scam. Fees, mandatory software purchases, paid certifications before you can start — legitimate employers test you for free. “Typing jobs” is one of the most heavily scammed search terms there is.
