Ten minutes, one passage, and the same marking SSC uses: see your key depressions, your full and half mistakes and whether the attempt would qualify.
The SSC skill test is taken on a computer keyboard. Practise on one if you can; a phone keyboard will not show your real speed.
For LDC and JSA posts, SSC asks for 35 words per minute in English, which its notice states as 10,500 key depressions per hour. Over the 10-minute test that is 1,750 key depressions: every letter, space and punctuation mark you type counts as one.
Speed alone does not qualify you. Your script is marked word by word, and the errors have to stay inside the limit for your category. The simulator above does both: it counts your key depressions and marks every mistake the way the guideline describes. For the Data Entry Operator post, choose the DEO data entry test: 15 minutes and 2,000 key depressions.
| Test | Time | Required speed | Key depressions needed | Error limit (as quoted) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CHSL typing test (LDC / JSA) Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant |
10 min | 35 words per minute (10,500 key depressions per hour) | 1,750 | UR / EWS: 7% OBC / SC / ST / PwBD / ESM: 10% |
| SSC CHSL data entry speed test (DEO) Data Entry Operator |
15 min | 8,000 key depressions per hour | 2,000 | UR / EWS: 7% OBC / SC / ST / PwBD / ESM: 10% |
| SSC CGL data entry speed test (DEST) Tax Assistant and other posts that require DEST |
15 min | 8,000 key depressions per hour | 2,000 | UR: 5% OBC / EWS / SC / ST / ESM: 7% PwBD: 10% |
Error limits are the figures coaching material quotes for this exam; SSC’s notice for your sitting is final.
SSC publishes its method as the Revised Guidelines for Evaluation of Typing Test/DEST Scripts. The simulator applies it clause by clause.
Total errors = full mistakes + (half mistakes ÷ 2)
Error % = total errors ÷ words attempted × 100
You qualify when you type at least the required key depressions and your error percentage stays within the limit for your category. Words you never reached at the end of the passage are not counted as left out.
35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi for LDC and JSA, which SSC equates to 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour. For a 10-minute test that is 1,750 key depressions in English. Data Entry Operators need 8,000 key depressions per hour, which is 2,000 in the 15-minute test.
Coaching material most often quotes 7% for UR and EWS candidates and 10% for other categories, as total errors over words typed. The notice for your own exam is final, so the limit in this simulator can be edited.
Under SSC’s evaluation guideline, a word left out, a wrong word, an extra word, a spelling error, a repeated word or a half-typed word is a full mistake. Spacing errors, wrong capital letters, punctuation errors, two words swapped, and a paragraph indented with spaces instead of the Tab key are half mistakes. Total errors are the full mistakes plus half the half mistakes.
The time limits, the key depression targets and the marking rules follow SSC’s notices and its evaluation guideline. The passages are original practice passages written in the same style, not previous papers, and the screen is TypeCrt’s own. In the real test the clock starts when the test opens; here it starts on your first key.
